What ingredients do I need for Easy Chana Dal – Instant Pot Split Pea Lentil Soup?

Chana dal, oil or ghee, asafoetida, cumin seeds, serrano peppers, curry leaves, onion, ginger garlic paste, tomatoes, ground turmeric, red chili powder, ground coriander, garam masala, salt, water, lemon juice, and fresh cilantro leaves.

How do I make this recipe?

Prep: First, rinse and dice the onion finely, rinse and chop the tomatoes and slit the green chili vertically but keep it still intact. Second, rinse and chop the cilantro finely and set it aside.


Third, rinse the dal with water a couple of times and set aside.

When you are ready to cook, select sauté on the Instant Pot. Further, add oil or ghee to the pot. Then, add asafoetida, cumin seeds, serrano pepper, and curry leaves.

Furthermore, after the cumin seeds splutter add in onions and ginger garlic paste. Additionally, stir well. Next after the onions turn golden brown, add in tomato and spices (ground turmeric, red chili powder, ground coriander, garam masala), and salt.

Moreover, sauté the tomatoes for 2 to 3 minutes until mushy. 

Further add the rinsed dal and water. And stir it all up.

Press cancel. Furthermore, Close the lid and select manual for 20 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally. Finally, open the lid and garnish with lemon juice and cilantro leaves.

Then, transfer to a serving bowl and serve with steamed white rice.

  • Transfer to a serving bowl and serve with steamed white rice.

Notes

This dal tends to thicken if kept in the refrigerator for the next day. You can add a little boiling water to thin it as needed.
You can reduce the red chili powder or eliminate the serrano pepper as per your spice tolerance. On a scale of 1 to 5, I would place this dal at 2.5 in terms of spice levels, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest.
