Here’s how to cook Gujarati Moriyo Ki Recipe – Sama Khichdi in under 20 minutes using minimal ingredients.

Ever heard of Moriyo? I hadn’t, until I was introduced to it by my friends mother-in-law. Moriyo is often cooked by Guajarati’s on days they are fasting. It is also known as Banyard Millet, Sama Chawal, Samo, and Farali. These little beads have a fantastic texture when cooked, are relatively quick-cooking because of their small size. Additionally, it’s naturally gluten-free. It is a wild seed and not a grain.


What ingredients do I need to make Gujarati Moriyo Ki Recipe – Sama Khichdi?

Oil of choice, cumin seeds, curry leaves, Serrano peppers, potato, water, bell peppers, moriyo/samo seeds, salt, ground turmeric, and cilantro leaves. Moriyo/samo seeds are easily available on amazon or Indian grocery stores.

How do I make Gujarati Moriyo Ki Recipe – Sama Khichdi?

Prep:

Firstly, rinse the moriyo seeds well.

Secondly, shred/grate the potatoes.

Thirdly, chop the bell pepper and cilantro finely.

Cook:

First, place a pan on medium-heat. Second add oil to the pan. Third when the oil is hot, add in cumin seeds.

Further, when cumin seeds splutter, add curry leaves, green chilis and sauté for a few seconds. Furthermore, add in shredded potatoes and 2 cups of water. Moreover, stir well. Next, add the diced bell peppers and bring it to boil (approx. 5 minutes). Keep stirring intermittently.

 

Then, add moriyo, 2 more cups of water, turmeric and salt.

Cook for 6-8 minutes or until desired consistency is reached. Finally, garnish with cilantro and serve.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp oil of choice
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds    (jeera)
  • 8 curry leaves
  • 2 serrano peppers (slit into 2 halves)
  • 2 cups potatoes, shredded
  • 4 cups water (divided)
  • 1/3 cup bell peppers, chopped finely (optional, you can eliminate if fasting)
  • 1/2 cup moriyo seeds
  • 1/3 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric     (haldi)
  • 2 tbsp cilantro

Method

  5. Then, add the moriyo seeds, 2 more cups of water, turmeric and salt. Stir well.
  6. Cook for 6-8 minutes or until desired consistency is reached. Keep stirring intermittently. Finally, garnish with cilantro and serve. It should have a consistency like sooji upma. Most of the water needs to be evaporated.
