A yummy potato recipe for kids! You can’t go wrong with a good potato snack. This Homemade Potato Smiley – Air Fryer Aloo Smiley recipe has a crispy top and a tender center. This recipe is nostalgic for me since I grew up eating my fair share of potato smiley face fries in India. However, the ones I ate were packaged.
These fries are healthy because they are air fried, without preservatives and super easy to make.

What ingredients do I need to make Homemade Potato Smiley – Air Fryer Aloo Smiley?
Boiled potatoes, bread crumbs, corn flour, Kashmiri Chili powder, salt, ground pepper and oil. Also, parchment paper and aluminum foil.
How do I make Homemade Potato Smiley – Air Fryer Aloo Smiley?
Firstly, scrub the potatoes clean if dirty and rinse them under running water. Remove and discard any sprouting areas. Secondly boil the potatoes until they are soft and can be mashed. I pressure cooked them, by placing them on a trivet in the instant pot with 2 cups of water for 10 minutes high pressure. Also, I let the pressure release naturally.
You can also use a stove top pressure cooker or boil them in a pot on the stove. They need to be tender so that you can peel and mash them easily.
Once you peel the potatoes, place them in a bowl. Then use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to mash them. Additionally, make sure there are no lumps.
Further add in bread crumbs, corn flour, Kashmiri red chilli powder (paprika), salt, and ground pepper.
Combine and form a stiff potato dough. Next divide the dough into 3 mid-sized balls.
Roll the dough out on a flat surface between two sheets of parchment paper , and roll to about 1/4 inch to ½ inch thickness.
Meanwhile, preheat oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes.
Use the rim of a small drinking glass cut out circles (you will get about 12 to 15 smiley’s depending on the thickness and size of the glass. Additionally. you’ll need to re-roll the left-over dough as needed.
For each potato face, use the tip of a straw to make the eyes. The smile can be made by using a spoon. Brush the faces with oil.

Cook:
Finally, when you are ready to cook aggressively grease the aluminum foil with oil using a brush. Gently move the potato faces to the aluminum foil without breaking them. Hold them from the bottom.

Place the foil with the potatoes in the air fryer basket. Make sure the basket does not stick out beyond the basket edge. ALSO, THIS IS KEY! DO NOT COVER THE BASKET BOTTOM COMPLETELY. To cook the food well, air needs to flow through the basket. If you cover the bottom of the basket, this reduces the airflow.
Next close the Air Fryer and set the time and temperature at 350°F for 13 to 16 minutes for a golden-brown color. Every air fryer is different so the time may vary. Check after the 13-minute mark. They need to be crispy before you take them out or else, they will break.
Repeat the process subsequently until you run out of the potato smiley’s.
