How to cut sweet potatoes for Spicy Sweet Potato Fries – Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries?
The key point to making crispy sweet potato fries is to cut them into evenly so that they all bake evenly.
Rinse and peel sweet potatoes. Further, slice the sweet potato in half vertically creating two equal-sized pieces.
Next, cut the pieces in half horizontally.
Once you have 4 pieces, chop the pieces to make fries about 1/4-inch thick, to be exact.
Next soak the chopped sweet potatoes in a bowl of cold water.
Soaking potatoes in cold water helps get rid of starch, which makes them extra crispy when air-fried.
If you have time, soak them for at least 20 minutes in a bowl with cold water. Furthermore, if you have plan to make these the next day, soak them overnight. The longer you can soak them, the better. Also, store them in the refrigerator while they soak. Once the potatoes have soaked, rinse and drain them. Then — also very important — use a towel to pat them down until they are nice and dry before moving onto the next step.
However, if you don’t have time you can eliminate the soaking process. Make sure to pat them dry before air frying.
How do I make Spicy Sweet Potato Fries – Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries?
First, rinse and peel the sweet potatoes. Secondly, slice the potatoes into 1/4 inch thick sticks. Don’t slice them super thin, like shoestrings. Slice the sweet potatoes evenly, this will ensure that all the potatoes are uniformly cooked and browned.
Further, soak the sweet potato slices in cold water for a minimum of twenty minutes, and up to overnight. The longer, the better. However, if you are in a rush you can eliminate the soaking process. I personally feel, soaking makes the fries crispy.
When ready to cook, drain the water and pat the potatoes dry with a kitchen towel.
Further, in a large mixing whisk together 1 tbsp oil, salt, garlic powder, red chili powder, and ground black pepper. Toss the fries in the spice-oil mix and mix well.
Furthermore, when you are ready to cook, grease your Air Fryer basket with 1 tbsp oil. I grease mine by rubbing, brushing, or spraying, a little bit of oil on the bottom grate. Then, follow your air fryer directions for preheating at 400°F for 8 minutes.
When it’s preheated, working in batches, place the sweet potatoes in a single layer. Cook in the air fryer at 400°F for 8 minutes, turning it halfway for brown and crispy fries or 6 minutes, turning it halfway for slightly soft fries.
